7th Grade Renaissance and Reformation Paper Due June 10th!!

Renaissance and Reformation Leading Figures

Directions: Students will write a minimum of a two page biography on a person of importance during the Renaissance and Reformation.
Students will be given their person of importance during class and they will have some class time to complete this assignment. Most work will need to be completed outside of class.
What the paper needs to include:
1. The paper needs to be typed double spaced in 12 point font Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman style.
2. The paper will need to address the following questions:
a. Where and when did your person live? Did they have family members? (10 points)
b. Educational Background: Did your person attend school or have a tutor? Were they self taught? (10 points)
c. Explain their personality: where they ambitious, outgoing? (10 points)
d. What is your person known for? What were their talents and achievements? (20 points)
e. How did your person influence history? (20 points)
3. Your paper should be in traditional format with an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs and a conclusion.
4. Your paper needs to be proofread for proper spelling, sentence flow and tense usage. ( 10 points)
5. Total Point Value: 80 points

7th Grade Students and Parents

I have asked that all students who failed to submit their homework today write a letter to their parents and have it signed as to why they did not have it completed.
Students were told that they would be given homework over the extended weekend. They were given the assignment on Wednesday and it was due today, this totaled six days to complete the work and many students came with nothing done. I am trying to stress the importance of time organization and extension at home so that during class time, we can have critical thinking and discussion.

8th Grade Immigrant Scrapbook Project Due June 2nd!!

Immigrant Scrapbook
Directions: You will be working with a partner to create a scrapbook that an immigrant at the turn of the century might have kept. The scrapbook will include biographical information, notes on the journey from the home country, a description of life in the United States and your own interview of someone in your family who immigrated to the United States.
You and your partner will split the assignments equally and present a final scrapbook together. Your scrapbook must include the following elements:
A. A cover page that includes a title and is visually appealing
B. An introductory page that provides background information on your immigrant including:
i. A fictitious name, date of birth, and native country
ii. A description of the family
iii. An explanation of the events or circumstances that prompted this person to immigrate
C. A two-page spread about the journey to the United States that includes
i. At least one written document, such as a letter from a family member living in the United States or an entry from the immigrant’s personal journal.
ii. At least two artifacts the immigrant used on the journey to the United States, such as a passport, a ticket for the trip to the United States, or coins from the home country. Each artifact must have a short caption explaining the item and how it was used.
iii. At least one visual, such as a simple sketch or a historical photograph, which show something that happened on the journey to the United States. The visual(s) must have a short caption.
D. A two-page spread about the immigrant’s experiences upon arrival in the United States that includes:
i. At least one written document, such as a letter the immigrant wrote to family or friends in the home country or an entry from a personal journal.
ii. At least two artifacts that the immigrant used upon arrival in the United States, such as a paycheck or a page from an English dictionary. Each artifact must have a short caption that identifies what the item is and explain how it was used.
iii. At least on visual, such as a simple sketch or a historical photograph, that represents the immigrant’s new life in the United States. The visual(s) must have a short caption.
E. A one-page spread for each person about someone in your own family who immigrated to the United States; this might include yourself, your parent(s), grandparents, etc. You need to include:
i. Who the person is, the year they came, where they came from.
ii. An explanation on the circumstances or event that prompted your relative to immigrate to the United States.
iii. You need to choose either of the following:
1. explain a part of their journey to the United States or
2. What they experienced when they first arrived in the United States, where did they live, work, etc.
iv. At least two visuals that represent your family member’s journey to the United States, this could be a photograph, sketch, document, money, journal, etc.
F. Creative touches that make your scrapbook look authentic.

8th Grade Map Assignment due Wednesday, May 4th

STAR Testing this week

Students and Parents, STAR testing begins tomorrow. Please be sure to get a good nights rest and eat a nutritious breakfast each morning during these two weeks. Remember, the schedule is a bit different so make sure you double check on which days you attend classes.

Students brought home progress reports this past Friday. I required that students receiving a C or less needed to have their's signed and brought back to me today. Many students did not do so; please check in with your child if you have not seen their progress reports!!

8th Grade Civil War Battle Project due May 2nd

The Civil War
Biography Project

1. You will be doing your project on: ______________________________________.

2. You will need to research and complete this assignment at home. There will be no class time given. It will be your job to gather information on your assigned person or battle. I recommend you use the internet to aid your search, but don’t forget encyclopedias, Who’s Who in the Civil War (found in local libraries – must be used inside the library), and other related readings (check the index of the book). If you are having difficulty in gathering information, please talk to the librarians – they know right where to look.

3. You will need poster board.

4. Your project must include the following:
A. A timeline for your assigned battle will start with the beginning of the battle and go until the end of the battle. You will have 7-10 entries. This will earn you up to 15 points.
B. You will write a report on the battle. You will include the main players on both sides, their success or failure up to that point, the strategies employed, the impact of the battle and the results. All of which could earn you up to 50 points.
C. Include two humorous or interesting incidents surrounding your assigned battle. This will earn you up to 5 points.
D. A drawing or photocopy of your assigned battle. Relevance of the pictures and its display can earn you up to 5 points.
E. A completed bibliography with at least three sources attached to the back of the poster board. Look in the back of your Literature book to find the proper way to write your sources. This will earn you up to 5 points.
F. You will need to put a full heading in one of the corners.

5. All writing must be typed or written in ink; however, pictures may be drawn in pencil.

6. Creativity, neatness, spelling, grammar, and the manner in which you display your project all play a part in your grade. Additional drawings, models, and/or maps will be considered extra credit. More than 5 spelling or grammar errors will drop you grade by 3%.

7. You project will be due Monday, May 2nd by 3:45P.M. Any late projects will be graded at 50%.

Pretend you are a nobleman or woman living in Heian-kyo during the 10th century. You are keeping a diary of your impressions of daily life during that time. Use your reading notes from Chapter 21 to create a diary entry that describes one day in your life while visiting the emperor’s court.

Your diary should include the following:

Have information about at least 6 aspects of your life. You are a member of the Chinese merchant class during the Song Dynasty.
You hope to make your fortune selling one of China’s newest inventions along the Silk Road. You realize the best way to gain more business is to make an advertisement for the invention. Your superior, Harpfucius, will supply the information about the invention you will be advertising.

Requirements:

• The name of your invention
• A creative slogan to advertise your invention
o Be Funny, Silly, Poetic, Etc…
• Full color illustrations
• Legible writing
• Use the entire poster
• One page minimum written on each of the following:
o Why is your invention important?
o How will it change the world? (Will people still be using it in the future……even in the year 2000?)
Grading
This project is worth 50 points
15 points: poster
Is it creative? Did you use color? Does it depict your invention?

35 points: Write up
Did you meet the length requirement? Did you explain why your invention is important? Did you explain how it will change the world? Did you give specific examples about how life has been without the invention? How life will be with the invention?
5 points: Neatness
*it is preferable that your writing is typed!! If not, blue or black ink only final draft form. Did you check for spelling errors? Did you check for sentence flow?

Timeline Assignment
Directions: You will make a timeline that includes events and people that we have been reading about from the years 1789-1839. Please use your notes and Chapters 12-14 for reference.
1. Your timeline must include a minimum of 9 events with the correct dates of the events
2. Your timeline must include a minimum of 9 people with a word explaining the importance for the date listed. For example: 1838 Trail of Tears
3. On the top half of your timeline, have the events listed in chronological order, on the bottom half, have the people and their explanation in chronological order.

4. On a separate sheet of paper, you will need to give a write up of 3 events and 3 people. Your write up must include how/why they helped to create an American Culture. This should be a minimum of 3 sentences per person and event.

You will be graded on the following:
Accuracy of events dates/events are correct: 12 points
Accuracy of people/importance are correct: 12 points
Write-Up: 18 points
Neatness: is your writing neat and legible? Is the timeline in proper order? 8 points
Total=50 points

7th Grade Announcement to Parents and Students

I will be beginning a new policy for all 7th grade students starting Monday: Any student who does not turn in their homework will have an after school detention. This has been an extremely difficult year with the seventh grade class and work completion. On average, I have about 70% of my students that submit work regularly, this seems to be the general theme throughout all classes. I encourage parents to ask their children to see the completed homework and maybe double check binder reminders or postings on our school site.

8th Grade High School Forms

Students, if you have not submitted your Jefferson Union High School form to me or IBL you will now have to bring it to the JUSD District Office located at the top of Seramonte.

8th grade Historical Fiction Assignment

Students will be reading a book of their choosing on a time period in history. The first part of the assignment; having the book is due Feb. 9th.
Below is the assignment due March 15th.

Assignment:
1. You will choose a novel that is Historical Fiction. Historical Fiction is where the main characters are fictional, not real, but they are involved with real events from history. Your novel can be from any period of time in history and does not have to relate specifically to U.S History even though this is a U.S History class…
When you choose your novel to read, please choose a novel that is of interest to you, more than 100 pages and one that you have not read previously!
2. You must have your book by Wednesday, February 9th 2011.
-your book must be approved by the teacher
Your assignment must include the following:
a. A summary on what the book was about. Maximum 1 page
b. What event/time period did you learn about? Be specific: give dates, people that were involved, why did the event happen, what was the result, etc. Minimum 2 pages

d. How has the United States been impacted because of this event/time period? Minimum 1 page
